Love Shouldn't Hurt

The Story Of One Man's Life

After his confirmation, Matthew spends the day with his best friend Peter, playing games and enjoying the sunshine before heading home early to finish homework. At home, he deals with his mother’s drinking and tension with his siblings, relying on his father’s quiet support. The next morning, he prepares for school on his own and rushes off with Peter, cherishing their time together.

Matthew is Aware that summer and secondary school will soon separate them, the boys vow to make the most of the days they have left. Matthew juggles tension with his mother, her frequent requests for money, and his growing friendship with Catherine and her children. As trust builds, Catherine invites him to move in when she relocates to town, and he starts helping with household tasks, from grocery shopping to coal for heating.

Despite family strain, Matthew finds belonging and purpose in supporting Catherine and her kids, gradually settling into a new chapter of life with them.

What began as a boyhood marked by loss, poverty, and loneliness grows into a young man’s journey of belonging, trust, and renewal. Each trial, each fracture in his family, becomes part of the foundation on which he builds a different future, one built on courage, compassion, and the enduring belief that love should never hurt.
